Christa and Anthony: Summerhill Pyramid Winery Wedding

Sunday, 7 July 2013

I've known Christa for a while now (10 years?) -- she was my navigator for our wildly successful navigational car rally career as well as my co-driver for stage rally career. So I was delighted to hear that she would be getting married to Anthony in Kelowna and that she'd asked me to photograph her wedding there over the May long weekend. I also brought my wife Kathy along, so when I was off-duty we had a bonus weekend getaway with some great food and wine.

The venue at the Summerhill Pyramid Winery is definitely unique: true to its name, there is a large pyramid out in front, inside which they finish their sparkling wines. There are some unexpected interesting features on the property to photograph, including an oriental-style archway and bridge, a replica of a kekuli (sacred earth house), and old settlers' cabin. And of course there is the wonderful overlooking view of the vineyard and lake perfect for their outdoor ceremony.

Despite the weather warnings and threatening clouds, the forecast rain held off nicely so the outdoor ceremony could go ahead. The day started off like most weddings – makeup and hair for the ladies (great tip to save some money – get makeup done at the mall, in this case the MAC counter at the Bay, and you can pay a fee or buy a certain amount of product) and straight razor shaves for the guys, a nice little luxury.

Like most of my weddings these days, many cultural heritages were represented there: Japanese, Dutch, and Jewish were out in force and everybody, young and old, was on the dance floor! The whole wedding party were really awesome when I stole them away from their dessert to grab some quick shots with the golden sunset that had developed – it would have been a crime to waste a good sunset – and we got some of my favourite shots.

Fiona and Philip: Mayfair Lakes Wedding

Saturday, 30 June 2012

Fiona and Philip’s wedding was a huge, intricately planned affair. In fact, I have never seen a wedding planned to such detail and pulled off with such precision, yet still be a lot of fun. Well done, guys! Trust an army of helpers and friends and an incredible, 8-page schedule that moved everyone between Coquitlam, Burnaby, and Richmond. I think they should get into the planning business!

As with most Chinese weddings, there were the games and challenges at the bride’s house to prove the groom’s worthiness prior to seeing his bride-to-be, and tea ceremonies. Not to mention lots of food, red packets, relatives, and pictures!

To top it off, there was the beautiful setting at Mayfair Lakes, where they have a little peninsula by the clubhouse surrounded by lakes and greens perfect for an outdoor wedding ceremony. That was followed by a quick formal session, and on to the dinner, speeches, more games, and a dance by Philip and Fiona.

Helena and Michael: West Vancouver Wedding

Saturday, 20 March 2010

The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.  Such a busy, yet wonderful festive time to be in Vancouver.  In between attending some of the Olympic events, Helena and Michael held a small and intimate wedding celebration at his parents' house near Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver with about 18 of their closest friends and family in attendance.

And what a beautiful setting it was!  The house is built into the side of the cliff and amidst the multiple levels of balconies and access to the waterfront we had a most memorable and enjoyable celebration.  The couple live in Geneva, and held the wedding back in Vancouver for the benefit of the friends and family that couldn't make it out to Ravello, Italy, where their white-dress wedding is going to be held.  So this was also a reunion of sorts for friends and family.

In a show of perfect timing, the sun decided to burn off the February rain and fog that day and gave everything a nice summery feel.  What I really liked about the wedding was the relaxed pace.  It wasn't rushed, and they took the time to enjoy the whole experience and catch up with friends and family.  Oh, plus the Thomas Haas (one of Vancouver's premier chocolatiers) chocolate cake as well -- a beautiful piece of work that was, and a different take on a wedding cake – delicious!

They're now back in their home in Geneva planning their Italian wedding for June -- too bad I already had a prior commitment for that date...arrgh! :(  All the best, guys!

Michael popped in during the makeup to steal a quick kiss:

Helena had to make a tough choice on what to wear as her wedding dress wasn't going to be ready in time for Vancouver, but she made a great choice!

Gorgeous setting overlooking the water.  Shades in February?  Only in Vancouver of course!
